Title: M432, Advanced Electromagnetism

Description:
This course covers the origins, properties and detection of electromagnetic radiation across the entire spectrum. Technological devices considered include the laser, Klystron, Gunn diode, wave-guides, optical fibres, photo-multipliers, semiconductor detectors and optical switches. Practical applications discussed will include the use of spectroscopic techniques to identify and characterise matter, wideband communications and remote sensing. The course will also cover some of the instrumentation used to process electromagnetic signals, particularly at low signal levels, and will examine the sources of electromagnetic noise, and techniques and instruments used to recover weak signals from noise.

Assessment is by practical work, assignments and final examination.
Prerequisites: Completion of pass degree in Physics or equivalent. Students who have successfully completed Microwave Physics (M432) are not permitted to enrol for credit.

Administrative information:
This is a 1 semester course (15 weeks). Between 13-18 hours of study per week is required. It is a 3 point course.
